A Valigota 2020 👉🏻 first vintage and already scored 93 P.Parker in the 2023 edition

  • Grapes: Made from the grape mix originally planted in the plot which includes Mencía, Brancellao, Merenzao, Ferrón, Alicante Bouschet and others
  • Wine-making: Only indigenous yeast was used for the fermentation process which took place in 500 l open barrels with no temperature control and minimal intervention. 35% of the grape fermented with the stems, the remaining 75% was destemmed but not crushed. Post fermentation maceration extended to 30-40 days according to tasting results
  • Ageing: Malolactic fermentation occurred in previously used, 500 l open barrels. The wine rested in the same barrels for a whole year before being launched onto the market
  • ABV: 13º

A Valigota is a 2500 m lot facing north on a steep slope, this being the reason why partially, it is spread out in terraces, half of the size of the lot approximately. According to the local vineyard record REVI, it was planted in 1919, on shallow slate and quartzite soils.

Our wine

The wine shows a purplish red colour with bluish and red hues.

Whispers of red fruit, both fresh and ripe, are followed by forest scents of tree branches, undergrowth and wet soil. Macerated black berries emerge creating an elegant contrast with the delicate aroma of violets.

Freshness on the nose is a key feature, well balanced with minerality and the complexity of seamless oak ageing. Slate and ferric notes are perfectly integrated with the smoothness of scents of vanilla, black chocolate, syrup, fine leather and tobacco leaves. Sparkles of spices intensify the aromas: black pepper and juniper with cosmetic touches of musk.

A high-class nose that covers the entire olfactory spectrum.

The attack in the mouth is very fresh, with a good volume of fruit -both black and red- and the coolness of eucalyptus and bay leaves. Paired notes of spices and iodine add the last touches to this fruity and palatable wine, with a clear Atlantic profile and whose fine tannins forecast a silky and sweet finish. It is ample and full-bodied, yet it feels light thanks to its high and vibrant acidity.

A Valigota 2020 a fine, elegant and interesting wine, with a clear evolution potential.

Useful information and pairing tips:

It displays a truly chameleonic gastronomic personality as it combines the virtues of both white and red wine. Delicious with starters, hors d’oeuvre, smoked preparations and patés, it will enhance the flavours of soups, consommés and broths, and will provide support to grilled and stewed vegetables. Its excellent acidity will cleanse the fattiness of blue fish and its character and fruitiness will demand the roundness and structure of white and red meat, either grilled or roasted.

It is perfectly enjoyable right now but we are certain it will beautifully evolve in the following years.
